Our history Our history
Gift of Life began as Medical Clinic on Wheels (MCOW) in 1992. Support from the Evangelical Lutheran Synod mission society, Thoughts of Faith Inc., together with the late Dr. Stephen Dudiak made this Ukrainian outreach possible. Children exposed to the nuclear catastrophe at Chernobyl were the first to receive treatments. Since those days 150,000 Ukrainian children and adults have benefited from MCOW.
Material Aid Material Aid
Baby and maternity clothing are given to pregnant women to help them and to show them Christian care. Gift of Life (GoL) also assists these women by supplying them with prenatal vitamins.
Material Aid Material Aid
Donations of new/used clothing, footwear and hygiene products are gathered and shipped from the United States to Ukraine by Thoughts of Faith. Gift of Life distributes the aid to needy people in Ukraine through the Lutheran Church congregations, counseling centers and other reliable institutions.
God God
The Christian Lutheran connection is evident to clients who visit the clinics, counseling centers and to those who receive material aid. They have an opportunity to hear God's word. Many women have their babies baptized into the family of believers. Gift of Life provides opportunities to the Ukrainian Lutheran Church to proclaim God's love found in Jesus Christ.

Alina's Introduction to Life Center Work

Alina Taranenko used to work at Gift of Life as a translator more than 15 years ago. Then she got inspired by the pro-life work Gift of Life does and became a mother of the two beautiful girls. Since then Alina has been working as the English teacher and has been a good friend to GoL and a devoted member of the Ukrainian Lutheran church. Recently Alina got interested in the work GoL does in the pro-life area and got familiar more deeply with what our pro-life counselors do. Here is what Alina had to share after visiting our 4 prolife- centers:

"I just want to share my impressions and a great experience I got in Gift of Life centers.

Here is humanitarian aid for
a young mother given through
her grandmother. That's right -
this is a great grandmother
in the photo.
A woman with 3 children was
provided assistance too.

There were 2 women from the organization which helps mothers in crisis situation and finds social dwelling for them. They were given clothes and books.

alina_and_tree_of_life_1.jpgIt was a great pleasure to meet counselor Svitlana from the LBLC, Kyiv. Her instructions were clear and purposeful.

The young lady is the one we met at the meeting with AbAnon director (Abortion Anonymous). She's going to move to Ternopil and start working with this organization.

The office in Kremenets is fantastic.  Pleasant people - counselor Nina as well as psychologist from the college and volunteer Svitlana.

Nice displays. A great variety of materials for different cases. A lot to learn in using all the instruments to drive people in correct direction.

The last life-center I visited was the one in Ternopil. I started from attending School of Father and a few group counseling sessions. I met counselor Nadiya and volunteer Khrystyna (professional physical exercise teacher).

It was real practical training for me. I wish I had such lessons when I was pregnant. Thank you for the opportunity to visit all the places. Alina”.

From the beginning of April through the end of July 2016 the Medical Clinic on Wheels has been to 8 different places. In each place hundreds of needy patients were provided medical and dental services as well as healthcare teaching, treated with the special attitude and little useful gifts and what is more important – all received the Good News.

Don’t Kill the Family!

Yet from the ancient times Ukraine has been always famous for the true family virtues. Family has always been above and beyond anything else. Some time ago no one could even think of a family different than “the union of a man and a woman”. Although now immoral, unchristian world and fashion to something “untraditional”, “different” and strange way of “self-fulfillment” has also influenced our Ukraine. The idea of making homosexual marriages legitimate is discussed on all levels. But the majority of Ukrainians are absolutely against it. That’s why Ukrainians showed their protest in many public events and meetings protecting family and children’s rights. For the moment Family Festival in Kyiv became the last bead in the chain of family events. It took place on June 4 which is the All-Ukrainian Day of children’s and family rights protection.

Gift of Life counselors of Kyiv pro-life centers Svitlana Leshchenko and Anna Kuchma happily presented the work of Gift of Life in terms of protection of family and life before birth.

Counselors of all our pro-life centers have been actively participating in this important all-Ukrainian process since the beginning of the year.

Thus, on May 22 similar Family Festival took place in Ternopil. Nadiya Khominska, our pro-life counselor from Ternopil with the three volunteers participated in the event.

In Kyiv on April 20 there took place a public march called “Don’t Kill the Family”. It was aimed at protection of a family as the union of a man and woman. Gift of Life was represented by Svitlana Leshchenko.

In Ivano-Frankivsk on March 23 there took place a public march called “For Family and Family Virtues”. Gift of Life was represented by Nina Andreychuk, our pro-life counselor from Kremenets with a volunteer and also Gift of Life driver Vasyl Mazurok.

On February 29 one of our Kyiv counselors Svitlana Leshchenko was invited to the Light Radio Station “Emmanuel” where for 45 minutes she was giving a live interview about pro-life of Gift Life all over Ukraine.

On February 26 and 27 all the Gift of Life counselors took part in the Family Forum in Kyiv initiated by the organization “Ukraine is for Family”.

Due to the similar meetings and events our counselors realize how important the work of the fund is that they have been doing for more than 20 years and now they got even more inspiration and reinforcement. Sincere gratitude is sent to the sponsors due to whose help this work becomes real!

Our summer 2015

We at Gift of Life can say that our summer season is over. Today, August 7th, is the last work day for most of the personell as tomorrow the annual monthly vacation begins. Everyone has been helping a number of the other people daily so now we are ready to spend time with our own families, get rested and inspired to continue this blessed work, Lord willing, for another year.

Patients at the Medical Clinic on Wheels

This summer was very special and rich in events for the entire country of Ukraine, therefore for Gift of Life too. Even though the headquarters of Gift of Life is in the Western Ukraine which is far from the war actions, our Medical Clinic on Wheels continues to travel to different regions helping the refugees, military families, poverty stricken population which unfortunately increased in numbers, and just the needy.

Dr.Laryssa and Dr.Oxana with the patients from one family: the widow of
a military man with her four children (8, 6, 4 and 2 year olds)
Our counselors in their locations meet more and more clients from all over Ukraine including the suffering Eastern regions. It happens quite often that a pregnant woman comes for a consult in tears on one hand wanting a baby, on the other hand being afraid as she is the refugee herself looking for a shelter and either her husband is in the war or her father or brother. It is so emotional to see when the only thing the little children pray for is the peace. They don't ask for candies or new toys but want their fathers to be back from the war or their mothers stop crying or have a new home where there are no bombs in the sky. Then our counselors at the pro-life centers or deacons/deaconesses at the clinic explain that our loving Father will provide EVERYTHING we need.

Gift of Life personell leaves for vacation but the good news is that the Holy Spirit never has one :) and the sown seeds will continue to grow through!

Please keep Ukraine in your prayers.

Children's Day in Ukraine

Children make a separate part of society who have their own rules of behavior and view on life which provide their development and turning into adults. Due to their special state, children need a special approach, social protection and respect of their rights.

In 2014 the whole world celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Since 1989 November 20 has been known as the Universal Children’s Day. Gift of Life Kremenets counselor Nina Andreychuk knows these facts very well therefore quite frequently the topic of her presentations for children is “The Alphabet of Your Rights”.  The counselor informs that children are sufficient members of society and they have many rights as the adults do and even more – they have their own special rights: a right to game, a right to family education, a right to communication with their mates. Such presentations are made for the LC clients as well as for the students of the Ukrainian Lutheran Church Sunday school.

It became a tradition for Ukraine to celebrate children’s day on June 1. This day is known as the International Day for Protection of Children. Devoted to this famous in Ukraine event at the Kremenets pro-life center there took place a special children’s holiday with all the traditional attributes: smiles, gifts, balloons and sweets.

Recently Ukraine also celebrated national costumes’ day therefore the style of the holiday was exclusively Ukrainian. In order to make every little participant happy our counselor decided to use a lottery as the gifts distribution method. No one felt offended: every child got a gift due to the chosen number.

The holiday became even more interesting because of the special guest: a 17 year old artist Tetyana presented her Ukrainian style handmade works for the first time for such a big audience.
